January 4, 2006 – West Palm Beach, FL – Today, the world lost one of its great leaders and pioneers in the Middle Eastern Community, Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the emir of Dubai and the Prime Minister and Vice President of the United Arab Emirates.

“There are no words that can describe the amount of loss that the world has experienced today,” commented 2008 US Presidential Contender Daniel Imperato. “My support and respect for Sheikh Maktoum is great and the work that he has done for the Dubai, the UAE, and the Middle East speaks for itself.”

Sheikh Maktoum was on a routine visit to Australia in order to attend the the annual Magic Millions horse stud sales.

Racing has always been a favorite pastime for Sheikh Maktoum who activities include the new A1 Grand Prix motor-racing competition and the world’s biggest horseracing stud, Godolphin.

Almost all the ruling officials in the emirates also hold ministerial posts in the UAE government, which is also a member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

During Maktoum’s term of office, the UAE was known through the Middle East for its peaceful demeanor and its strong relations around the globe.

“In a region where there has been much conflict, the UAE stands out as a pillar of peace,” stated Imperato. “This was in large part due to Sheikh Maktoum’s great leadership, and his commitment to the betterment of his people and his region.”

Sheikh Maktoum died of cardiac arrest soon after being admitted to the hospital just before 1pm yesterday after earlier complaining of neck pain.

His influence has been felt all around the world, especially in London where he spent several weeks every year.

“In his quiet way, Sheikh Maktoum was a pillar of the federation,” Anthony Harris, a former British ambassador to the UAE said. “He…was remarkable for an Arab leader because he allowed his younger brothers to have a higher profile.”

Last night, Sheikh Maktoum’s brother, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, was sworn in as the new emir of Dubai.

Imperato, a man with very strong ties to Dubai and the UAE, also expressed his condolences for the family as well as support for their leadership.

“I would like the bin Rashid Al Maktoum family as well as all of the UAE to know that they have my deepest condolences for their loss. While we mourn the loss of a great man, we must now show support for his brother, Sheikh Mohammed, to carry on the legacy started by his brother, and to serve as a beacon of leadership for his people and the world.”
