A tragic prank gone wrong has resulted in felony murder charges for three teens from Georgia. Sydney Maughon, 18, Jeremy Munson, 18, and McKenzie Davenport, 19, were arrested in connection to the July 3 shooting death of Johnathan Gilbert, otherwise known as Tyler Lane. Maughon is accused of firing the shots that killed Gilbert and has also been charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Munson was also charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm while committing a crime.
The Spalding County Sheriff’s Office (SSCO) identified the suspects after locating a witness who provided them with information. The phone number assigned to one of the defendants was tracked, leading law enforcement to a residence in Henry County, where they found the car used on the night in question. Upon executing a search warrant for the vehicle and the residence, detectives found the gun believed to have been used in the crime.
Investigators believe the incident was spurred on by an ongoing argument between lovers, and the three had gone to Gilbert’s residence to egg it. When Gilbert saw what was happening, he confronted them, at which point they ran to the car. Gilbert was unarmed, but Maughon allegedly grabbed a gun and shot him several times as he approached the vehicle. The car then sped away, leaving Gilbert’s body in the middle of Dobbins Mill Road.
Sheriff Darrell Dix stated that all three are equally responsible for the crime, as they had “plotted and planned together and traveled to the location with the intent to commit a crime that led up to the murder together.” He added that “they bought that ticket together; now, together, they can ride that ride.”
