Indianapolis, Indiana – One person was killed and five others, including an off-duty Indianapolis Metro police officer, were injured in a shooting outside a bar early Sunday morning. The incident occurred at 9449 E. Washington St. when a disturbance broke out in the parking lot, according to authorities.

The Indianapolis Metro Police Department stated that two off-duty officers were working security at the bar when gunfire was exchanged between the officers and at least one suspect. One officer was shot, and first responders provided immediate aid before he was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

In addition to the injured officer, four other individuals were found with gunshot wounds. The victims include two 45-year-old men, a 42-year-old man, and a 33-year-old woman. Another male victim arrived at Community East Hospital with a gunshot wound and later succumbed to his injuries.

Police are currently investigating to determine the circumstances surrounding the injuries sustained by the victims. They have recovered one firearm from the scene.

Both off-duty officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave as the investigation continues. Chief Chris Bailey commended the bravery of the officers and expressed his gratitude for their commitment to keeping the community safe.

Chief Bailey described the incident as “unnecessary and chaotic” and emphasized the risks faced by law enforcement officers on a daily basis.

The injured officer is reportedly recovering well and is eager to return home to his family and resume his service to the community.
