Providence, Rhode Island – A 14-year-old has been arrested and charged with murder in connection to the shooting death of a 17-year-old teenager last month. The suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed due to their age, appeared in Rhode Island Family Court on Tuesday. Apart from murder, the teen is also facing charges of conspiracy and firearm possession.

The incident occurred on February 1, when police responded to Legion Memorial Drive and discovered Emil Rodriguez lying on the street near Neutaconkanut Park. The victim had suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene. Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez expressed his sadness over the involvement of a 14-year-old in the crime, which took place while officers were investigating an alarm at a local business.

An ongoing investigation is being conducted into the shooting, with no arrests made at the time of the incident. The Providence Police Department has been contacted for further information.

In the wake of her son’s tragic death, Evelyn Rodriguez, the victim’s mother, created a GoFundMe page to gather donations for the bereaved family. Emil, a 17-year-old who had recently celebrated his birthday, was described as an outgoing and friendly teenager with aspirations to become an ironworker. He was celebrated as a talented athlete, having won two consecutive Washington Park Little League Championships and other accolades.

With the weight of grief and financial struggles, Evelyn expressed her gratitude to anyone willing to support them through this difficult time. While facing the fear of losing their home and falling behind on bills and rent, the family is seeking assistance.

Authorities have confirmed that the 14-year-old suspect was already serving time in the Rhode Island Training School for another offense.

This tragic incident highlights the impact of gun violence within the community, particularly involving young individuals. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are hopeful to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death in the near future.
