The shooting occurred on Friday night around 9 p.m. as police were dispersing a large group of people along 175th Street. Mitchell, who was not involved in any gang activity, was simply leaving the game when he was struck multiple times. The Hillcrest Hawks football team expressed their sorrow on social media, calling the act of violence senseless and urging prayers for those affected.

Authorities in Country Club Hills are actively investigating the crime and are hopeful that security cameras at the school will provide valuable leads. Community activist Andrew Holmes has offered a reward of at least $2,000 for any information that leads to an arrest. Holmes emphasized that Mitchell was not targeted and that the shooter made a tragic choice to use a weapon.

In response to the tragedy, the Bremen High School District 228, which includes Hillcrest High School, canceled the homecoming dance scheduled for Saturday night. The district released a statement expressing their deep sadness and offering support resources for students and staff affected by the incident.

Mitchell’s family described him as a gifted athlete with dreams of playing football at Hillcrest and eventually making it to the NFL. He had recently transferred to Hillcrest in search of a better environment.

As the investigation continues, the family and community are pleading for anyone with information to come forward. Lenore, Mitchell’s mother, is desperate for answers and justice.
