The remote campground of Gold Creek Campground in Colorado became a mystery site after a hiker discovered three decomposed bodies on Sunday, July 10th, 2023.
According to subsequent reports by law enforcement, two bodies were located inside a small tent, and the third was found outside. Along with the bodies, tarps, personal belongings, and a firepit were discovered at the campsite.
The identities and cause of death of the three deceased individuals are still unknown. Gunnison County Sheriff Adam Murdie and Gunnison County Undersheriff Josh Ashe have urged the residents and outdoor enthusiasts in the area not to fear any danger.
Murdie reported to CBS News Colorado that “[he] didn’t observe anything on-scene that makes us believe that there was a crime involved in this,” adding that though no leads have been found, a missing person file is being analyzed in search of information.
To make sense of the situation, Gunnison County Coroner Michael Barnes suggested to CNN that the people may have died from starvation or cold weather, given that the remains appeared to be from late July of 2022.
Additionally, Murdie told ABC News, “This is not a typical occurrence anywhere, by any means.” Then added that the bodies were “fairly mummified.”
The Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the three decomposed bodies found at the remote campsite of Gold Creek Campground, Colorado. As of now, the identities and cause of death of the three deceased individuals remain undetermined.
Authorities are actively searching for missing person reports as they continue to work to find some explanation for this incident.
