COLUMBUS, Ohio — An 8-year-old boy has been found dead in Columbus, Ohio, and his mother is facing charges of murder and obstruction of justice in connection with his death, according to Columbus police. Two women, including the boy’s mother, are now in police custody as authorities investigate the case.
The boy’s mother, Lashanda Wilder, 32, called the police on Friday to report that her son, Martonio Wilder, had not been seen since the previous night when he went to bed, said Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant in a statement. Officers arrived at the scene and soon suspected there may have been foul play involved.
Later that evening, Martonio Wilder’s body was discovered in a trash bag in the attic of their home, according to court documents. The Franklin County Coroner’s Office has ruled the case as a homicide, although the exact cause of death has not been determined.
Following the discovery, an AMBER Alert was issued for Lashanda Wilder and her two other sons, 9-year-old Mikhael Simon and 3-year-old King Wilder. Fortunately, they were found safe at a family member’s home shortly after the alert was issued.
Johnna Lowe, 33, who is believed to be Wilder’s partner, is facing a charge of obstructing justice. The police report indicates that both Wilder and Lowe became uncooperative during the search for Martonio.
Community members expressed shock and sadness at Martonio’s death, describing him as a sweet child who loved animals.
The investigation into Martonio Wilder’s death is ongoing, and the police have not released any additional information at this time.
