A Texas woman, aged 50, is facing charges of capital murder following the fatal stabbing of her 9-year-old son. The accused, Wilma Jamitza Medina, was apprehended on Wednesday for the death of David Ogbevbon Ehanire-Medina, as confirmed by local authorities.
The incident occurred in the early hours of September 3, when the Universal City Police Department received a distress call from a residence located on Zodiac Drive, near San Antonio. Upon arrival, officers were led to the young victim who was found in his bed with multiple stab wounds.
Emergency medical personnel immediately began life-saving procedures and rushed the boy to a nearby hospital. Despite their efforts, the child succumbed to his injuries shortly after reaching the medical facility.
Authorities initially provided limited information about the incident, only confirming that it was an isolated event and that a 50-year-old woman had been arrested. Further details emerged during a news conference held by the police on Thursday afternoon and through the release of court documents.
Detective Sergeant David Faust, speaking at the briefing, expressed the emotional toll the incident had taken on the first responders. He revealed that upon their arrival at the scene, they found the father attempting to keep the mother away from the child, who had been stabbed multiple times.
The Police Chief, Johnny Siemens, also commented on the horrific nature of the crime, stating that such incidents deeply affect everyone involved and are difficult to comprehend.
According to reports from a local ABC affiliate, the police found the father restraining his wife, who was covered in blood. The child was unresponsive in his bed, with visible stab wounds on his neck.
In a shocking turn of events, Medina managed to grab a knife and stab herself in the leg while authorities were securing the scene. During the struggle to disarm her, Medina reportedly yelled out, expressing her desire to die.
The father, an officer with the China Grove, Texas, Police Department, told investigators that he had just returned from his night shift when he heard a scream from his son’s room. He forced open the locked door to find his wife holding their lifeless son in one arm and a knife in the other, which she used to stab herself in the chest.
Medina, who was transported to the hospital, later told investigators that she believed she was being followed and that there were people trying to break into her house. She also expressed concern about her son being harmed at school.
In a subsequent phone call with family members, Medina reportedly referred to herself as “trash” in Spanish and expressed shame for her actions. Medina is currently being held at the Bexar County Jail on a $600,000 bond. Her next court appearance has not yet been scheduled.
