OURILÂNDIA DO NORTE, Brazil — A former mayor and city councilman fatally shot his estranged wife during a June 3 divorce meeting inside a law office, then killed himself, police in Pará state said.
Authorities identified the victim as Icicléia Alves Veloso, 41, a businesswoman and mother of three known locally as Leia Veloso. Police said her estranged husband, Romildo Veloso e Silva, 69, opened fire during a meeting to finalize their divorce and divide property. Investigators are treating the case as femicide followed by suicide.
The couple had been separated for about three months when they met with legal representatives in Ourilândia do Norte, a municipality in southeastern Pará. During the meeting, Silva asked to speak with Veloso alone, according to investigators. The attorney left the room. Moments later, people inside the office heard gunshots and called authorities.
Police said surveillance video from the office showed Silva standing behind Veloso while she was seated and firing at her. Officers found Veloso critically wounded but alive. She was taken first for emergency care and later transferred to Hospital Regional da PA-279, where she was admitted in grave condition. Hospital officials later confirmed she died from traumatic brain injury caused by a gunshot wound.
Silva was found dead in a bathroom inside the same building with a gunshot wound to the head, police said. A revolver was recovered nearby. Investigators have not publicly said whether Silva left a note, whether the weapon was legally owned or whether anyone had reported threats before the meeting.
Silva was a physician, former four-term mayor of Ourilândia do Norte and a sitting councilman. Veloso had served as first lady during his time in office and was known in the city through her business and public role. The deaths drew broad attention in the municipality because both were well known in local political and social circles.
The city government issued a note of mourning after the deaths and declared three days of official mourning. Local reports said relatives, friends and residents gathered to remember Veloso, who is survived by three children. Police continued reviewing witness statements, video recordings and physical evidence from the office.
Because Silva is dead, prosecutors are expected to close any criminal case after police complete their final report. The remaining steps include forensic analysis, formal witness review and delivery of the findings to judicial authorities.
The investigation remains open as police complete reports on the June 3 shooting. No additional suspects have been announced.
