MARTINSVILLE, Ind. — Police in central Indiana are searching for a 24-year-old man considered armed and dangerous after a weekend shooting inside a Martinsville residence left a 48-year-old man dead and a 35-year-old woman wounded.
Martinsville police identified Levi Camplin as a person of interest in the Aug. 29 shooting that killed Jimmy Adams of Martinsville. Authorities have not publicly named Camplin as a suspect or announced criminal charges against him. Police said Camplin was seen leaving the area in a vehicle after the shooting. Investigators later located that vehicle abandoned, but Camplin remained at large Monday afternoon.
Police responded late Saturday to a report of shots fired at the residence and found Adams and the woman suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were transported to a hospital, where Adams died from his injuries, according to information released by police and confirmed to People. The woman remained hospitalized in stable condition. Authorities have not publicly released her name or provided further details about her injuries.
The Martinsville Police Department and Morgan County Major Crimes Task Force are jointly investigating the shooting. Authorities have released few details about what happened inside the residence before the gunfire. Investigators have not publicly identified a motive, said whether the victims were specifically targeted or explained what connection, if any, Camplin had to Adams or the wounded woman.
Police initially asked the public to watch for a yellow pickup truck with a black tailgate believed to be associated with Camplin. Investigators later announced that the vehicle had been located abandoned. Authorities did not disclose where it was found or publicly describe what evidence, if any, was recovered from it. The discovery shifted the search toward locating Camplin himself.
Law enforcement officials have emphasized that Camplin is currently described as a person of interest. That designation means investigators want to locate and speak with him as part of the homicide investigation; it does not by itself establish that he committed a crime. Police nevertheless warned that he should be considered armed and dangerous while the search continues.
Camplin’s name previously surfaced in a separate central Indiana investigation after a deadly 2020 robbery in Bargersville. Authorities sought him as a person of interest after two people were killed during that incident. People reported that Bargersville police later determined Camplin was a victim in that case rather than a suspect. He was not charged in connection with those deaths.
The earlier case is separate from the Martinsville investigation, and authorities have announced no connection between the two incidents. Police have also not disclosed whether Camplin has communicated with investigators since Saturday’s shooting. Officials have continued pursuing leads through the Martinsville Police Department and the Morgan County Major Crimes Task Force.
As of Monday afternoon, police had not announced that Camplin had been located or taken into custody. Investigators continued asking anyone who sees him not to approach him and to contact law enforcement. No criminal charges had been publicly announced against Camplin in connection with Adams’ death as the homicide investigation and search continued.
