Calamba, Philippines – Juan Jumalon, also known as DJ Johnny Walker, was tragically shot and killed while hosting a Facebook Live stream for 94.7 Calamba Gold FM in his home-based radio station in Calamba town. The incident took place around 5:30 a.m. local time on Sunday morning, according to authorities.

The gunman gained entry into Jumalon’s home by posing as a listener before shooting him twice in the face. As the attack unfolded, a video captured Jumalon slumping back in his chair after the gunshots while music continued to play. The perpetrator’s face was not visible in the footage. The assailant also stole a gold necklace from Jumalon before fleeing the scene.

Jumalon, 57, was pronounced dead while being transported to the hospital. Police have launched an investigation to determine if the shooting was work-related. On Monday, a sketch of one of the suspects was released on Facebook, and authorities are appealing to the public for any information that may aid the investigation.

The shocking incident has drawn condemnation from President Bongbong Marcos, who vowed that those responsible for the murder would face justice. “Attacks on journalists will not be tolerated in our democracy, and those who threaten the freedom of the press will face the full consequences of their actions,” Marcos said in a statement.

The fatal shooting of Jumalon highlights the dangerous environment faced by journalists in the Philippines. According to international press freedom organizations, the country has a poor record when it comes to protecting journalists and ensuring their safety. The Committee to Protect Journalists has listed the Philippines as one of the most dangerous countries for media workers.

This case serves as another tragic reminder of the risks journalists around the world face in their pursuit of truth and bringing information to the public. It underscores the urgent need for governments and law enforcement agencies to prioritize the protection of journalists and hold those who commit such acts accountable.

Authorities are actively seeking leads and urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in their investigation. As the news of Jumalon’s senseless killing reverberates, his family, colleagues, and the broader media community continue to mourn his loss.
