LOS ANGELES, California – A Los Angeles resident is considering legal action against United Parcel Service (UPS) after her dog tragically died when a heavy package, thrown carelessly by a delivery driver, landed on it. The incident, captured on surveillance video and witnessed by neighbors, raises questions about the driver’s negligence and has potential legal implications.
Surveillance footage, which was aired by local CBS affiliate KCAL, shows a UPS truck stopping in North Hills. The driver is seen struggling with a weighty package as he crosses the street to Naria Harutjunjan’s house. Unfortunately, the package resulted in the death of Harutjunjan’s rescue dog, Lulu.
Harutjunjan tearfully recounted the incident, explaining that she discovered Lulu trapped beneath the package when she went outside to collect it. Although the UPS driver appeared to notice the aftermath before leaving, it is unclear whether he was aware of the harm caused during the delivery. The distressing screams of Harutjunjan and her concerned neighbor were captured on the video.
Grateful for the assistance of her neighbors, Harutjunjan rushed Lulu to a nearby clinic, but the dog had already passed away. Now, she is contemplating legal action under California Civil Code, which allows for “exemplary damages” when animals are wrongfully harmed due to gross negligence.
The resident claims that the UPS driver failed to ring her doorbell, an essential step in ensuring the safe delivery of packages. When contacted, UPS acknowledged the incident and assured Harutjunjan that they are investigating the matter and will take appropriate action.
As the investigation unfolds, this case emphasizes the responsibility of delivery drivers to handle packages with care, especially when it concerns the safety of beloved pets.
