The Milwaukee community is reeling from the tragic loss of a well-loved local figure, Jamil Owais, who was fatally shot during a disagreement over pizza preparation at Action Food & Liquor, where he was employed as a cashier. The shocking incident, which unfolded in broad daylight on October 19, has left the community stunned and a family grieving.
Charles Leggett, the accused shooter, reportedly became enraged over claims that a cook had not used gloves while making his pizza. The argument spiraled out of control, culminating in Leggett shooting Owais in the chest and then fleeing the scene.
Owais was a respected figure in his community, admired for his commitment to the family business and his kind, generous spirit. He had moved to Milwaukee from the West Bank in 2013 and swiftly became a valued member of the community. On the day of the incident, Owais was covering for his brother, underscoring the random nature of this heartbreaking event.
Mohammad Owais, Jamil’s sister, voiced the profound sorrow felt by the family and the community. The family-run store, a cornerstone in the community, now bears the weight of this tragedy.
Patrons of Action Food & Liquor have paid homage to Owais, recalling his amiable manner and contagious laughter. His sudden departure has left a significant gap in the community.
Legal officials have charged Leggett, who was unlawfully in possession of the firearm due to prior convictions, with first-degree reckless homicide. He is currently awaiting trial with bail set at $200,000. If found guilty, Leggett could be sentenced to up to 75 years in prison.
In a cruel irony, it was confirmed after the incident that the cook had indeed been wearing gloves, casting a further shadow over the senseless act of violence.
