NEW YORK CITY – A dead body was discovered on a Manhattan sidewalk on Friday evening, wrapped in a sleeping bag placed on a dolly, according to the NYPD. Police were called to the scene in Kips Bay after receiving a report of a “suspicious package” around 5 p.m. The sleeping bag had been left among several black trash bags awaiting garbage collection.
Ted Oehmke, a local resident shared video and photos on social media showing police surrounding the sleeping bag. Oehmke stated on social media that he saw the top of the head, but the identity of the deceased is still currently unknown. It is also unclear whether foul play was involved in the death, pending an examination by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner.
Authorities are actively investigating the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the body’s presence.
As the investigation continues, the NYPD urges anyone with information to come forward. The Office of Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an examination to determine the cause of death and to ascertain any potential signs of foul play.
