Reusable water bottles are a common sight in many households, but a recent incident has raised concerns about their cleanliness. A father, Jason Sullivan, took to social media to share his alarming discovery of mold in his child’s Yeti water bottles, despite regular cleaning. His revelation has sparked a conversation about the importance of thoroughly cleaning reusable water bottles, especially those used by children.

Sullivan, who regularly rotates the bottles his daughter uses, noticed that they weren’t as clean as they should be. He reached out to Yeti for advice on how to clean the bottles, which aren’t designed to be disassembled. The company suggested boiling the bottles in hot water for 5-10 minutes. However, after following these instructions, Sullivan found visible mold underneath the rubber seal where the straw inserts.

The concerned father shared his experience on TikTok, warning other parents to regularly check their children’s water bottles for hidden buildup or contamination. His video quickly gained traction, with many viewers expressing their agreement or sharing their own experiences with these high-end water bottles.

One viewer commented, “This is why we switched to Klean Kanteen — better and fewer parts to clean. Was sick of cleaning the mold.” Another lamented the complexity of water bottle designs, saying, “It drives me crazy that all water bottles have so many extra parts to them, making it impossible to properly clean.”

Sullivan’s experience isn’t an isolated incident. Kayla Houlihan, founder of Tribe Skincare, also found mold in the straw of her water bottle. She shared her shock in a TikTok video, revealing that she had been ill on and off for three years. After her sister suggested she clean the straw of her bottle, Houlihan was stunned by the amount of mold she found.

These incidents underscore the importance of thoroughly cleaning reusable water bottles, particularly those with complex designs that may harbor hidden mold. While these bottles are environmentally friendly and convenient, they require diligent cleaning to ensure they are safe for use.
