A Texas-based urologist is facing allegations of performing surgeries while under the influence of drugs. Dr. Nathan Starke, 39, formerly of Houston Methodist hospital, was suspected of being impaired during several surgeries conducted in August and September 2024, according to the Texas Medical Board. His license was suspended on September 6, and he was ordered to undergo drug testing. In October, he tested positive for cocaine.
However, the allegations against Starke extend beyond his professional conduct. He has a criminal record, including an open case for assault against a former girlfriend in March 2023. According to court documents, Starke allegedly pushed the woman, causing her to fall and injure her tailbone, back, and head. She reported bruising and a chipped tooth as a result of the incident.
Starke’s criminal history also includes two arrests for driving while intoxicated, in 2007 and 2017. Detailed records from the Texas Medical Board, obtained by local Fox affiliate KRIV, shed further light on the allegations against Starke in his professional capacity. One of the surgeries under scrutiny was a prostate biopsy performed in August, during which Starke was reportedly impaired.
The final incident that led to Starke’s suspension involved a surgery in September. Starke was reportedly absent for all but the last three minutes of the procedure, for which he was the attending physician. Officials at Houston Methodist confirmed to KRIV that Starke is no longer employed at the hospital.
Despite these allegations and his suspension, Starke may still have a chance to regain his medical license. The Texas Medical Board’s suspension is temporary, and if Starke can demonstrate improved behavior, he may be allowed to practice again. However, the board has stated that allowing Starke to perform surgeries currently “poses a continuing threat to public welfare.”
