MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Tennessee doctor was tragically killed while defending his wife and young daughter from a robber on Sunday. Alexander Bulakhov, 32, was out for a walk with his wife, Anastasia Bulakhov, and their 2-year-old daughter on Sunday when a masked man approached them with a gun.
According to the affidavit, the suspect, identified as Marious Ward, demanded the couple’s wallets. However, when Ward pointed the gun at Anastasia, asking for her things, Alexander stepped in to protect her. A scuffle ensued, and during the struggle, the gun went off, gravely injuring Alexander. He was rushed to the hospital but sadly succumbed to his injuries.
The Memphis Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation. Surveillance footage captured the suspects fleeing in a white vehicle. Authorities located Ward and his alleged accomplice, Brandy Rucker, the next day. Both suspects were taken into custody during a traffic stop.
Alexander Bulakhov had recently relocated to the Memphis area to begin a postdoctoral fellowship at St. Jude Children’s Hospital. His employers have set up a fundraising campaign to support the family during this difficult time, as Anastasia has yet to find employment.
St. Jude Children’s Hospital released a statement expressing their deep sadness over the loss and their commitment to supporting the family during this challenging period.
Ward and Rucker are currently facing charges of first-degree murder, using a firearm to commit a crime, and attempted murder, among other charges.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the need for increased safety measures and vigilance. The investigation is ongoing, and both suspects are scheduled to appear in court on December 1st.
