Las Vegas, Nevada – A college professor suspected to be the gunman responsible for a deadly shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) has been identified as Anthony Polito, according to law enforcement sources. The shooting, which left three people dead and one injured, occurred on the campus of UNLV before the perpetrator was killed by police.
Anthony Polito, 67, described himself as a “semi-retired university professor” on his LinkedIn profile. He had previously worked at East Carolina University for over 15 years before his retirement in 2017.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Sheriff Kevin McMahill stated that the shooting unfolded in Beam Hall, the business school building, shortly before noon. Reportedly, shots were also fired at the Student Union, located directly across from Beam.
During a press conference, Sheriff McMahill informed that a group of students had been outside Beam Hall engaged in leisure activities when the shooting occurred. Quick response from the police prevented the loss of “countless” lives.
The authorities have yet to release the identities of the victims, whether they were students or staff members.
As part of the ongoing investigation, law enforcement officials conducted a search of Polito’s apartment in Henderson, Nevada. Among the items seized was a cell phone belonging to Polito, along with other electronic devices.
The motive behind the shooting remains unknown, and further details have not been disclosed by the authorities. The incident has left the UNLV community shaken, and they are mourning the loss of lives caused by this tragic event.
