OLIVETTE, Mo. – A tragic incident unfolded in the suburbs of St. Louis over the weekend when a former college football player accidentally shot and killed his mother, mistakenly believing she was an intruder attempting to break into their home.
According to authorities, Jaylen Johnson, 25, discharged his weapon around 7:30 a.m. on Thursday when his mother, 56-year-old Monica McNichols-Johnson, tried to enter their Olivette residence through the back door. Johnson, who had been previously robbed at gunpoint, had kept the firearm in the house for protection.
Despite desperate efforts by Johnson’s girlfriend to save her, McNichols-Johnson succumbed to her injuries and passed away at the scene. Johnson immediately contacted emergency services following the incident and has been visibly distraught since then, as expressed by his lawyer, William Goldstein.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, Johnson’s misplaced judgment has resulted in him facing charges of manslaughter and armed criminal action. During his arraignment, bail was set at $100,000. Johnson’s attorney and officials have emphasized that he has no criminal history, is currently employed, and had played college football in the past.
This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences that can arise from misidentifying perceived threats. Authorities are urging individuals to exercise caution and employ proper communication before resorting to lethal force. The case will continue to be investigated as it moves through the legal process.
