The Central Michigan University community is mourning the loss of former quarterback Tommy Lazzaro, affectionately known as “Touchdown Tommy,” who died in a hunting accident at a Florida Air Force base. The university confirmed the tragic incident, which took place on Sunday, and stated that Lazzaro was 27 years old at the time of his passing.
Lazzaro was a pivotal figure for the Central Michigan football team from 2016 to 2019, playing a significant role in the team’s journey to the MAC title game in 2019. After graduating, he enlisted in the United States Army, continuing a family tradition of military service started by his father and grandfather.
The fatal accident occurred at the Eglin range at the Eglin Air Force Base in Freeport, Florida. Lazzaro, who was serving with the 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, was struck by a stray bullet fired by a hunter. According to a representative from the 7th Special Forces Group, Lazzaro was en route to help a fellow soldier with car trouble when the incident happened.
The accident prompted immediate action from several agencies, including the Walton County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The incident has been described as a “tragic hunting accident.”
During his time at Central Michigan, Lazzaro played in 20 games, starting in five. He completed 72 passes for 758 yards and five touchdowns, and rushed for 542 yards and 11 touchdowns on 133 attempts. Prior to his time at Central Michigan, he played for a year at Dodge City Community College, where he racked up 2,237 yards and 14 touchdowns, leading the team to a 9-3 record.
Jim McElwain, the head coach who took over the Central Michigan program in 2019, remembered Lazzaro as a leader. He expressed that the football program was fortunate to have him and that his absence would be deeply felt.
At the time of his death, Lazzaro had achieved the rank of sergeant in the military. His dedication and commitment were recognized by Col. Patrick Nelson, 7th SFG(A) commander, who extended condolences to Lazzaro’s family, friends, and comrades. A memorial service for Lazzaro is set to take place in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, on Saturday.
