Israeli President Isaac Herzog displayed an antisemitic textbook found in Gaza titled The End of the Jews at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday.
The book, created for schoolchildren, was written by Mahmoud az-Zahar, one of the founders of Hamas and former foreign minister of the Palestinian Authority.
The book has been described as “a blueprint for the annihilation of the Jewish people” and was discovered by IDF troops in the Al-Furqan neighborhood in the Gaza Strip.
In a conversation with commentator David Ignatius at the Munich Security Conference, Herzog described chapters of the book which included “The World’s Burning Hatred of Jews” and “Reasons to Expel the Jews.”
Regarding the Nazis, the book teaches that although many countries believe they committed crimes against humanity, they instead should be considered as role models for their desire to exterminate Jews.
Herzog said, “This book mainly says that there is no need to recognize that there are Jews, that there is a Jewish people, but mainly it glorifies the Holocaust, what the Nazis did, and calls on nations to follow in their footsteps.”
He added, “Now we are in Munich. On the outskirts of Munich, there is the Dachau concentration camp, where tens of thousands of Jews were massacred.”
“And that’s the problem, we need to form a coalition of all the moderate forces in the world, fighting this ideology,” Herzog concluded.
During the discussion, Herzog was asked about hostages who remain in Gaza and the negotiations to release them.
Regarding his meeting with the Prime Minister of Qatar, Herzog said, “I think he is advancing great efforts despite the difficulty and complexity.”
He added, “At the same time, we need to ensure that we know if there is someone making decisions on the other side.”
“After all, we are dealing with people who are scattered and hiding all over Gaza, mainly in tunnels, and we need to know their whereabouts,” Herzog concluded.
