A tragic incident unfolded at Evergreen High School in Evergreen, Colorado, near Denver, on Wednesday afternoon when a young shooter opened fire, injuring two students before turning the gun on himself. Local authorities reported that the incident took place around midday at the school, which is situated roughly 30 miles west of Denver.
The three individuals involved in the incident, including the juvenile shooter and two students, all suffered gunshot injuries. They were promptly transported to St. Anthony’s Hospital in a serious condition. The shooter, a male juvenile, later died from his self-inflicted injuries, as confirmed by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
One of the injured students is currently in critical condition, while the other is recuperating from non-life-threatening injuries. The shooter, whose age has not been disclosed, used a revolver to carry out the attack outside the school. Some of the shots fired managed to penetrate the school building, according to the sheriff’s office spokesperson.
The spokesperson also noted that the shooter might not have been old enough to drive, and she believes that no shots were fired by law enforcement during the incident. Another individual was also injured, but it remains unclear whether they were involved in the incident.
Evergreen High School, with a student population of approximately 900, was placed on lockdown following reports of an active assailant on campus. The shooting took place on school grounds but outside the school building. Authorities are still working to determine the exact locations of the primary crime scenes.
Parents were reunited with their children at a nearby elementary school after the high school students were safely evacuated. The community was assured that there is no longer an active threat, and authorities are working diligently to obtain a search warrant for the shooter’s home.
Colorado Gov. Jared Polis has been informed of the situation and is closely monitoring it. In a statement, he said, “State Troopers are supporting local law enforcement in responding to this situation. Students should be able to attend school safely and without fear across our state and nation. We are all praying for the victims and the entire community.”
