Indianapolis, IN – A 25-year-old man from Indiana has been taken into custody and charged with murder after the police responded to a shooting incident at his Indianapolis home. Robert Cooley was arrested on June 1, following a report of a person shot, and the officers discovered the lifeless body of a woman with apparent gunshot wounds. While the victim’s name was not initially revealed, a probable cause affidavit obtained by WXIN identifies her as 26-year-old Amber Morgan, Cooley’s wife. The affidavit states that Morgan had been severely beaten, had her throat cut, and appeared to have been shot.
During police questioning, Cooley reportedly confessed to taking his wife’s life, admitting to beating and shooting her. According to the affidavit, Morgan had given birth to a baby girl about a month prior to the incident and had sought help from her mother in obtaining a petition for dissolution of marriage.
The couple had purportedly been dealing with ongoing domestic issues, leading to arguments. Amber’s father, Corey Morgan, suggested that something had upset Cooley, who had been verbally abusing his daughter. The tragic incident occurred the day after Amber sought assistance in ending the marriage.
Amber Morgan was employed as a kindergarten teacher at Victory College Prep, a local charter school in Indianapolis. The school released a statement expressing their grief and emphasizing her dedication to her colleagues and students.
The Indiana Department of Child Services responded to the scene, and the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will determine the final charges against Cooley. It remains unclear whether he has retained legal representation.
