Sunday brought tragic news as the IDF confirmed that three Israelis kidnapped by Hamas in October lost their lives due to an airstrike in Gaza.

The victims are Sergeant Ron Sherman, Corporal Nik Beizer, and Elia Toledano. Their bodies were recovered in December, but the circumstances of their deaths have only recently come to light following an extensive investigation.

According to the IDF, the three hostages were likely killed on November 10 during an operation targeting Ahmed Ghandour, the commander of Hamas’ Northern Brigade. The airstrike hit a tunnel complex where Ghandour was believed to be operating and where the hostages were being held.

At the time of the strike, the IDF did not have information about the presence of hostages in the targeted compound. In fact, they reportedly had information suggesting they were located somewhere else. However, based on several factors, including the location where the bodies were found in relation to the strike’s impact and forensic evidence, Israel’s Intelligence Directorate concluded that there is a high probability the hostages were killed as a result of the airstrike.

However, the IDF noted that it is not possible to definitively determine the exact circumstances of their deaths.
