Israel has called on the United Nations Security Council to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization, and to publicly condemn Iranian attacks on civilians.
On Tuesday, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar penned a letter to US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz, who currently is serving as president of the Security Council, urging the Security Council to respond to Iran’s attacks on more than a dozen countries across the Middle East.
“The Iranian regime’s recent actions underscore that its aggression constitutes a direct threat not only to Israel, but to regional and international peace and security. I urge the UN Security Council to condemn Iran and immediately designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization,” Sa’ar said in a statement Wednesday afternoon.
In his letter to Waltz, Sa’ar defended Israel’s decision to strike Iran, in conjunction with the US, beginning on February 28, citing the regime’s openly declared “objective to annihilate the State of Israel” and Iran’s attempts to obtain nuclear weapons.
Citing Iranian missile and drone attacks not only against Israeli civilians but also against neighboring states across the Middle East, along with Cyprus, Sa’ar wrote that Iran has violated its obligations to the United Nations.
In addition, Iran’s efforts to shut down international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz also constitute a violation of international law, Sa’ar wrote.
“Israel calls upon the Security Council to condemn Iran’s acts of hostilities across the region, as well as its decades-long destabilizing activity.”
Noting that the US and European Union have already designated Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist group, Sa’ar called on the United Nations Security Council to follow suit.
