Israel’s National Security Minister proposes housing jailed terrorists in a maximum security prison surrounded by crocodiles and alligators in northern Israel.

Israel’s prison system is reviewing a plan to build a new maximum security prison surrounded by crocodiles and alligators to house jailed terrorists.

The proposal was drafted by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir (Otzma Yehudit) as a solution to the country’s overcrowded security prisons.

In the wake of the detention of thousands of terrorists during and after October 7th, 2023, Israel’s prison system has struggled to accommodate the expanded number of security prisoners, leading to the establishment of makeshift detention facilities on military bases, including the Sde Teiman detention camp in southern Israel.

Ben-Gvir’s proposal calls for the construction of a new permanent facility, specially constructed to house terrorists, to be built in the Hamat Gader area of northeastern Israel.

Located near the Syrian and Jordanian frontiers, Hamad Gader is home to hot springs and a nature reserve, with a controlled population of crocodilians, including Nile crocodiles, alligators, caimans, and gavials.

Ben-Gvir reportedly discussed the proposal with Israel Prison Service Commissioner Kobi Yaakobi during a recent security briefing, and the IPS is assessing the plan’s feasibility, Yedioth Ahronoth reported on Sunday.

The proposal has drawn comparisons to the South Florida Detention Facility, a federal detention center used for housing illegal immigrants in the Everglades.

Nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz” by Florida’s Attorney General, the detention facility’s location in a natural alligator habitat drew both criticism and support, with some, including President Donald Trump suggesting the presence of alligators in the area would deter escape attempts.

“A lot of bodyguards and a lot of police in the form of alligators. You don’t need to pay them that much. But I wouldn’t want to run through the Everglades for long,” Trump said.
