In a shocking incident, a man from California, who allegedly decapitated his parents and their pet dog, was shot multiple times by police officers. The man, identified as Joseph Gerdvil, was found singing Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got to Do With It” while lying injured on the ground.
On July 9, Orange County sheriff’s deputies discovered Gerdvil on a street near San Juan Mobile Estates. They were responding to a horrifying murder scene in San Juan Capistrano. The decapitated bodies of his parents, Ronald Gerdvil, 77, and Antoinette Gerdvil, 79, along with their brutally killed dog, were found in their mobile home, according to police reports.
Gerdvil, 41, was later seen allegedly attacking a maintenance worker. When the police approached him, he was covered in blood, speaking incoherently, and hurled a heavy shovel at them. As a deputy ordered him to surrender, Gerdvil charged at the officer, who fired five shots at him from a close range of about 10 feet.
The initial three bullets seemed to have minimal impact on Gerdvil. However, after the fourth shot, he fell to the ground, bleeding profusely from his wounds. Officers on the scene quickly began administering first aid to Gerdvil, whose behavior took an even more bizarre turn.
At one point, Gerdvil was heard saying, “I love you … I’m sorry you’re gonna have to die,” followed by a plea to the officers to “finish him off.” As the officers worked to stem his bleeding, Gerdvil began singing love songs, including the 1984 Tina Turner hit, “What’s love got to do with it, got to do with it? What’s love but a second-hand emotion?” He also sang Stevie Wonder’s “I just called to say I love you.”
Gerdvil was rushed to a nearby hospital where his condition was stabilized. He is now facing two counts of homicide for the deaths of his parents.
