A 72-year-old Florida resident, John Burgos, is currently in custody after allegedly shooting his dog, Flick, out of frustration over a power outage caused by Hurricane Milton. The incident occurred in the early hours of October 12, just days after the hurricane had swept through the state, leaving millions without electricity, including Burgos.
Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey reported that Burgos was under the influence of alcohol when he shot Flick at his residence in Rockledge. The sheriff expressed his disgust over the incident, describing it as one of the most unnecessary acts he had encountered.
Hurricane Milton had made landfall on Florida’s west coast on October 9, resulting in power outages for approximately 3.4 million people. Florida Power & Light had not yet restored power to Burgos’ residence nearly three days after the storm. In a fit of anger, Burgos allegedly began shooting, hitting his dog.
Rather than immediately contacting emergency services, Burgos reportedly went to his neighbor’s house, claiming he was unable to locate his phone. From there, he called 911 and informed dispatchers that he believed he had shot his dog, according to Sheriff Ivey.
Upon arrival, deputies rushed Flick to an emergency animal hospital. Despite the efforts of the veterinarians, they were unable to save the dog’s life. Sheriff Ivey stated that Burgos showed no remorse for his actions, blaming the power company for his dog’s death. The sheriff countered this claim, stating that Burgos’ actions were a result of his own anger, lack of emotional control, and intoxication.
Burgos is now facing charges of animal cruelty, using a firearm while under the influence of alcohol, and discharging a firearm within a dwelling. He is currently being held at the Brevard County Jail without bond.
