In a shocking incident, a man was taken into custody by New York police on charges of murder after he attempted to deliver his deceased father’s body, bearing two gunshot wounds, to a local sheriff’s station. The man, identified as 30-year-old Richard Fluegel Jr., brought the body of his father, Richard Fluegel Sr., to the sheriff’s office located in the Livingston County Government Center on a Monday.
Sheriff Thomas Dougherty expressed his disbelief at the unusual occurrence, stating that it was not a common practice for individuals to arrive at the station with a deceased body, intending to surrender it. The sheriff’s office was alerted to the situation by a call to the county’s 911 line, informing them of Fluegel Jr.’s presence in their parking lot with a dead body. The caller was later revealed to be the son’s legal counsel.
The sheriff emphasized the abnormality of the situation, stating that it was a unique circumstance in his career and likely in the experience of many law enforcement agencies. The elder Fluegel was found to have sustained two shotgun wounds.
According to Sheriff Dougherty, the victim had left his home in his car around 2 p.m. and did not return, causing concern among his family members. The family subsequently filed a missing person report. Early on Monday morning, the case came under the jurisdiction of the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office when the vehicle was located in the village of Dansville, using tracking technology.
The motive behind the alleged shooting of the father by the son is still under investigation by the police. Sheriff Dougherty reiterated that such incidents were not common in Livingston County, which is generally considered a safe place.
