A Minnesota man, Lue Chang, 32, is currently facing second-degree murder charges in connection with the fatal shooting of his cousin, Nichanon Kittikroekphon, a prominent Thai musician. The tragic incident took place during a family gathering on September 21, which was organized to celebrate recent family births, as reported by local law enforcement.
Witnesses informed the Brooklyn Park police that around 30 people were in attendance at the home during the celebration. It was during this event that Chang is alleged to have fired two shots at Kittikroekphon, causing him to collapse. A third shot was reportedly fired into Kittikroekphon’s back as he tried to flee, according to the affidavit.
Several men at the gathering were able to subdue Chang and disarm him, while others called 911. When questioned about his motives, Chang allegedly stated that he shot Kittikroekphon because he felt disrespected. Another witness reported hearing Chang tell Kittikroekphon, “today, you are going to die,” before the shooting. Surveillance footage from the scene showed Chang approaching Kittikroekphon and speaking to him in an agitated manner. Investigators noted that Kittikroekphon was unarmed and posed no threat to Chang.
Emergency medical services rushed Kittikroekphon to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The affidavit also noted that several children, including a two-year-old, were in close proximity to the shooting.
Following the incident, Chang was arrested and is currently being held at the Hennepin County Jail on a $1 million bond. If convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison. His next court appearance is scheduled for October 21.
Kittikroekphon, known by his stage name Tswb Moua, was a rising star in Thailand’s music industry, according to a post on the Hmong Talk Facebook page. He had relocated to the U.S. to live with his brother.
