Cheyenne, Wyoming – A Wyoming man, Cody Fertig has been charged with aggravated assault after allegedly running over his ex-girlfriend’s head with his car at a gas station in Cheyenne. The incident occurred on December 10, 2023, following a heated argument between the couple. Fertig now faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault, property destruction, battery, and interference with a police officer.

According to Cheyenne Police Department, the altercation began at the Maverik Adventure’s First Stop gas station on Gardenia Drive. Two witnesses at the scene stated that Fertig’s ex-girlfriend was run over by the defendant’s vehicle, causing serious injuries, while the other witness was hit in the face with an ice scraper. Police arrived at the gas station around 3 a.m. and interviewed the women involved in the incident.

Fertig’s 23-year-old ex-girlfriend was riding in a truck with a friend and was on the phone with Fertig prior to arriving at the gas station.

When they arrived at the gas station, Fertig was already there, visibly upset and pacing around the parking lot. The victim confronted him, holding an ice scraper in her hands. Fertig responded by pointing a firearm at her before pushing her to the ground and repeatedly punching her in the face. He also used the ice scraper to strike the truck and hit the driver through the open window.

The altercation took a more gruesome turn when Fertig got back into his vehicle. His ex-girlfriend attempted to confront him by opening the passenger door and yelling at him. Fertig then reversed his car, hitting her with the open door and driving over her body and head before fleeing the scene.

Miraculously, the victim survived the incident but suffered serious injuries. She was found lying on the ground with a pool of blood around her head. Her head and ankles were swollen, and she appeared dazed and confused. The victim was able to provide Fertig’s first and last name to Officer Reece Federer, who responded to the scene.

Fertig was arrested the following day at a grocery store in Cheyenne after a brief foot chase. During his interview with the police, he admitted to being angry with his ex-girlfriend due to the rumors she had been spreading about him. Fertig claimed to have “blacked out” during the altercation and had trouble remembering the details.

If convicted on all charges, Fertig could face years in prison and significant fines. The case has been elevated to the felony-level Laramie County District Court, with Fertig’s arraignment scheduled for January 8.
