SUMMERVILLE, SC – A block party in Summerville turned tragic on Thursday night when a man suffered fatal injuries while setting off fireworks. The incident occurred in the Crestwood Subdivision on Cottonwood Drive, where authorities responded to reports of a fireworks incident.
When police arrived at the scene, they found a male individual lying on the roadway. The victim has been identified as 41-year-old Allen Ray Mcgrew. According to his wife, they were hosting a block party and Mcgrew had been drinking since 6 p.m. Eyewitnesses reported seeing him placing a large firework on his head in an attempt to “show off.”
Unfortunately, the firework exploded on top of Mcgrew’s head, causing severe injuries. The Dorchester County Coroner’s office pronounced him dead at the scene at 11:10 p.m. His wife’s statement, along with witness accounts, indicate that alcohol and a lack of safety precautions were factors in this tragic incident.
Nick Paclibar, a neighbor who witnessed the scene, emphasized the importance of practicing safety when handling fireworks.
