SUN CITY, Arizona — A tragic incident unfolded early in the morning on June 25, as a 60-year-old man forcibly entered his estranged wife’s apartment in Sun City and fatally shot her, while her mother was found dead at the scene, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities initially responded to reports of suspicious noises coming from the apartment above, prompting concerned neighbors to investigate. What they discovered was a scene of horror – an open front door, and a man in dark clothing, wearing gloves, and wielding a gun. The intruder held the neighbors at gunpoint and forced them to lie on the ground while he confiscated their phone, threatening violence should they attempt to intervene.

However, in a moment of bravery, the neighbors managed to escape back into their own home and immediately dialed 911, providing the authorities with critical information. Deputies swiftly arrived at the apartment and heard the desperate cries for help coming from inside.

Inside, they found the man’s wife, still clinging to life despite sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. Tragically, her mother did not share the same fate and was discovered lifeless. Medical responders made valiant efforts to save the wife; however, her injuries proved fatal. In her last moments, she revealed that her “ex-husband,” identified as Robert McGrath, had carried out the gruesome act. She provided deputies with his address and a description of his vehicle.

Investigation at the scene uncovered signs of forced entry, with the front door damaged and a large brick found inside the apartment. Further details shed light on the couple’s troubled relationship – the woman had filed for divorce on June 17 and had previously reported McGrath to the police, alleging threats against her life.

Authorities wasted no time in apprehending McGrath at his El Mirage residence. He now faces a slew of serious charges, including two counts of first-degree murder, aggravated assault, kidnapping, armed robbery, and first-degree burglary.

Authorities continue to investigate the case to ensure justice is served for the victims.
