Man sprays poison on produce at Walmart

A shocking video circulating on social media has led to the arrest of a man who was filmed spraying bug killer on the produce section of a Walmart in Mesa. The man, identified as 27-year-old Charles Smith, allegedly committed the act in a bid for online fame, according to local law enforcement.

The video, which quickly went viral, shows Smith using a can of insecticide on fresh produce and rotisserie chickens. The disturbing footage has caused widespread alarm, with one shopper expressing shock at the brazen act and highlighting the potential risk to unsuspecting families.

Law enforcement officials reported that Smith entered the Walmart on a Thursday night, where he is alleged to have stolen a can of Hotshot Ultra Bedbug and Flea Killer. He then proceeded to spray the food items, causing nearly $1,000 in damage before posting the video online. Although the original post was quickly taken down, another user managed to capture and redistribute the clip, prompting a police investigation.

By Saturday, officers had made contact with Smith, who subsequently turned himself in. He now faces several charges, including introducing poison, criminal damage, and endangerment. Police also found an outstanding warrant for Smith’s arrest in Tempe and noted his history of other public safety threats.

Investigators disclosed that Smith admitted to orchestrating what he calls “pranks” for social media, reportedly earning between $6,000 and $10,000 monthly from his controversial content. His previous antics allegedly included locking people inside a Goodwill and throwing food at unsuspecting mall patrons.

Following his latest stunt, Smith reportedly returned to the store shortly after the incident to remove the contaminated items, amidst a wave of online backlash. However, it remains unclear whether any shoppers purchased the tainted produce before it was removed.

In response to the incident, a Walmart spokesperson confirmed that all affected fruits, vegetables, and rotisserie chickens were removed and the areas sanitized. The retailer is actively cooperating with law enforcement to address the situation.
