Melissa Jubane, a 32-year-old nurse from Oregon, was found dead just two weeks after her wedding. Jubane had plans to relocate to Washington state to live with her husband, Bryan Llantero, who she had been in a long-distance relationship with for over a decade. The couple had recently celebrated their nuptials in Honolulu, Hawaii, where they first met.
Jubane’s remains were discovered on Friday evening following a three-day search. Her neighbor, 27-year-old Bryce Johnathan Schubert, was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Jubane was reported missing after she failed to report for her morning shift at St. Vincent Hospital in Southwest Portland. Despite a wellness check requested by her coworkers, police found no trace of her at her apartment.
Jubane and Llantero had maintained their long-distance relationship due to Jubane’s job at the hospital, which was conveniently located near her Oregon apartment. Llantero resided in Washington state with Jubane’s family. Following their wedding, Jubane intended to find employment in Washington to be closer to her husband, according to her mother-in-law, Imelda Llantero.
In the wake of Jubane’s tragic death, her family members have taken to social media to seek justice and honor her memory. Jax Marquez, Jubane’s cousin, has dedicated parts of her social media to Jubane, including changing her profile picture to read “Justice for #melissajubane.”
Marquez described Jubane as having “the sweetest soul in the world” and expressed her desire to create a space for those who knew Jubane to share their memories of her. Jubane’s father, Valentin Jubane, also expressed his grief online, promising that justice would be served for his daughter.
Another cousin, Onilobes Allan, used the tragedy to call on politicians to enact laws that protect potential victims from harm. He urged the government to take action to ensure the safety of good citizens, so they can live in peace and happiness.
