Iran has denied that it reached out to the United States for ceasefire talks, adding that the Islamic Republic is not interested in negotiating with the US after surprise attacks on Tehran on Saturday.
On Monday morning, Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and a close adviser to Iran’s slain Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, published a series of posts on his X account, denying claims by President Donald Trump a day earlier that Tehran has made overtures to the US calling for a ceasefire.
“We will not negotiate with the United States,” Larijani declared in response to a report by the Wall Street Journal that Iran has sent requests to the US via mediators for an immediate truce.
The Atlantic quoted Trump in an article published on Sunday morning in which he claimed that following the assassination of Khamenei and other senior Iranian leaders, the country’s new ruling triumvirate has called for a ceasefire.
“They want to talk, and I have agreed to talk, so I will be talking to them,” Trump said. “They should have done it sooner. They should have given what was very practical and easy to do sooner. They waited too long.”
In another X post, Larijani denounced Trump’s decision to strike Iran, accusing him of serving Israeli interests.
In an apparent nod to far-right criticism of the president, Larijani said Trump had abandoned the “America First” agenda in favor of “Israel First.”
“Trump plunged the region into chaos with his ‘delusional fantasies’ and now fears more American troop casualties,” Larijani wrote.
“With his delusional actions, he turned his self-made ‘America First’ slogan into ‘Israel First’ and sacrificed American soldiers for Israel’s power-hungry ambitions and with new fabrications, it is once again imposing the cost of assassinating its own character on American soldiers and families.”
“Today, the Iranian nation is defending itself. The armed forces of Iran did not initiate the aggression.”
