Washington D.C. authorities are on the hunt for a suspected gunman following the shooting and killing of a teenager at the Brookland Metro station on Thursday afternoon. The incident took place on the platform of the station located at the 800 block of Monroe Street, NE. According to initial reports, officers responded to a call of shots fired just before 4 p.m. and discovered the victim inside the station. Despite efforts by first responders, the victim did not survive their injuries, prompting the involvement of the MPD homicide unit.
During a press conference held by D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith and Deputy Chief Maurice McKinney with Metro Transit Police, details emerged regarding the preliminary investigation into the tragic event. It appears that a group of teenagers was engaged in a fight on the platform when an individual, not involved in the altercation, brandished a firearm and discharged multiple rounds. It remains unclear how many shots were fired or if the victim was the intended target.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, special police officers swiftly evacuated the Brookland Metro station while the suspected gunman managed to escape. Authorities have issued a lookout for the individual described as a light-skinned black male, seen wearing a black jacket, black hoodie, light blue jeans, black and white shoes, and carrying a square gray backpack.
As the search for the suspect continues, the nearby Catholic University implemented a shelter-in-place order, resulting in the cancellation of all remaining classes and sports activities. Meanwhile, WMATA stated that Chief Anzallo is en route to the scene and will provide further information, with the MPD handling the investigation.
