The fitness community is still in mourning following the death of renowned fitness instructor Richard Simmons, who passed away last month at the age of 76. His brother, Lenny Simmons, confirmed that the cause of death was complications from recent falls and heart disease. The information was provided to Lenny by the Los Angeles coroner’s office, as relayed by Tom Estey, a spokesperson for the Simmons family.

Richard Simmons, a beloved figure in the fitness world, was discovered deceased on July 13, a day after his 76th birthday. His housekeeper, Teresa Reveles, found him. In an interview, Reveles shared that Simmons had a fall on July 11, but declined medical attention on his birthday, choosing to wait until the next day. Regrettably, by then, it was too late.

The coroner’s report stated that Richard’s death was accidental, with heart disease as a contributing factor. The toxicology report found no signs of illicit substances, only prescribed medication. The family expressed their appreciation for the outpouring of love and support during this challenging time.

Reveles also shared that prior to his death, Simmons was unable to exercise or teach fitness classes due to his health condition. He had undergone knee replacement surgery and was in need of another. In 2014, Simmons confided in Reveles that he could no longer jump and felt it was time for him to retire from his fitness career.

A private funeral was held for Simmons in Los Angeles on July 19, attended by his family and closest friends. He was laid to rest at the Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park and Mortuary.

In an interview following his brother’s death, Lenny Simmons encouraged people not to be sad but to remember Richard for the joy and love he brought to people’s lives. He highlighted Richard’s genuine care for people, as demonstrated by his constant communication with thousands of people throughout his career to offer help and support.
