Ricky Pearsall, a rookie wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers, was injured in a shooting incident during an attempted robbery in San Francisco this past Saturday. The 23-year-old, who was a first-round draft pick, was reportedly targeted by a thief who was trying to steal his Rolex watch in Union Square. The incident occurred around 3:37 p.m. while Pearsall was on his way to a signing event at Geary and Market Street.
The situation quickly escalated into a physical confrontation, during which Pearsall was shot in the chest. The alleged thief was also injured in the ensuing struggle. Both Pearsall and the suspect were rushed to San Francisco General Hospital for medical attention.
The 49ers organization has confirmed that Pearsall is in serious but stable condition. San Francisco Mayor London Breen expressed his concern for Pearsall and his family, assuring that updates would be provided as they become available. The suspect was apprehended and is currently in police custody, with charges pending.
Footage from the scene, obtained by local news outlet KTVU, shows Pearsall shirtless and clutching his chest as he is assisted by first responders. A security guard in Union Square reported seeing a man, believed to be the robber, fleeing into a nearby store carrying bags. The incident caused panic in the area, with bystanders fleeing in fear.
San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott condemned the violence, stating that such acts will not be tolerated in the city. He wished Pearsall a speedy recovery and assured that his department will do everything in its power to ensure justice is served.
Pearsall, a former player for Arizona State University and the University of Florida, was selected 31st overall by the 49ers in this year’s draft. He had an impressive 65-catch, 965-yard 2023 season with the Gators. Pearsall had been sidelined due to a shoulder injury and had only recently resumed practice with his new team when the shooting occurred.
