Ocean City, New Jersey – A 46-year-old man from Ocean City has been arrested and charged with the brutal murder of his 74-year-old mother. Police allege that Jeffrey Surgent used a knife to decapitate his mother, Alexandria, inside their apartment.
Court documents reveal that Surgent called 911 and confessed to the dispatcher that he had killed his mother. He also mentioned his bipolar disorder during the call, providing a possible explanation for his actions.
Upon arriving at the scene on Friday, authorities found Surgent naked and lying on top of his mother’s lifeless, decapitated body. Throughout the subsequent encounter with the police, Surgent expressed remorse for his heinous act.
Surgent now faces charges of murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon. He is currently being held in custody in Cape May County.
Relatives of the victim told reporters that Alexandria had been visiting her son on the day of the incident. The apartment building, located on the 600 block of 6th Street, is affiliated with the Ocean City Housing Authority, and investigators have reviewed surveillance camera footage as part of their inquiry.
The investigation into this horrific crime is a collaborative effort involving the Ocean City Police Department, Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, and the New Jersey Southern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.
In response to the tragedy, Alexandria’s grandson, Chase Surgent, has established a GoFundMe page to help cover the expenses of her funeral. In describing her as the “greatest grandmother in the world” who played an essential role in their daily lives, Chase hopes to provide a dignified farewell for his beloved grandmother.
