Giulia Manfrini, a 36-year-old Italian adventurer and social media influencer, tragically lost her life in a bizarre incident involving a swordfish while surfing off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The incident occurred earlier this month at Masokut Island in the Mentawai archipelago, a popular surf break. Witnesses reported that a swordfish unexpectedly leapt from the water, impaling Manfrini in the chest.

Manfrini, a former professional snowboarder and a well-known figure in the surfing community, sustained a deep wound on the left side of her chest, measuring approximately 5cm (1.96 inches). Fellow surfers at the scene quickly transported her to a local health clinic, the Pei Pei Pasakiat Taileleu Health Centre. Despite their efforts, Manfrini succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.

Among those who attempted to save her life were Massimo Ferro and Alexandre Ribas, who provided immediate first aid at the scene. According to the Siberut Police, Manfrini had managed to signal for help to two witnesses before she was taken to the clinic. Medical reports later revealed that she had foam in her nose, indicating oxygen deprivation from drowning.

News of Manfrini’s untimely death sent shockwaves through her hometown in Italy. Venaria Reale’s mayor, Fabio Giulivi, was among those who paid tribute to the surfing coach. He expressed the community’s grief and shock on Instagram, stating that the entire community was rallying around Manfrini’s family.

Manfrini’s Instagram page, which boasts a following of 24,000 fans, has been inundated with heartfelt tributes since the news of her death was made public. One follower poignantly wrote, “The sea, that gave you so much, has taken your life. Rest in peace.”

Manfrini, who studied law at university, was known for her love of extreme sports. She had transitioned from a career in professional snowboarding to become a surfing instructor. She also co-founded an online travel company specializing in surf and snow experiences. Her life, filled with adventure and a deep love for the sea, was vividly documented on her social media platforms.

Manfrini’s body is currently being transported back to her home country, Italy.
