Tragedy struck on Saturday at Cape Hatteras National Seashore in North Carolina when a 17-year-old Virginia boy died after a sand dune collapsed on him, burying him deep in a hole that he had dug.
His family and friends were searching for him when they found the teen buried in the pit and immediately called for rescue operations.
According to officials, a 911 call was received at about 2 pm regarding the trapped teenager. First responders worked as fast as possible to dig the teen out from the sand and then provided CPR, but they could not revive him.
The death of the unidentified teenager is being investigated, and the National Park Service has extended its sympathies to his family and friends.
The incident serves as a reminder to beachgoers of the risks associated with digging deep holes. This area of North Carolina is a prominent destination for people looking to surf, fish, and enjoy the beach.
The National Park Service has urged holidaymakers to be mindful of the dangers of digging holes in the sand. The pit where the young man was found was in the back-dune area behind the primary one and wasn’t visible from the waterfront.
