A 15-year-old girl from Utah is currently in a medically induced coma following a dangerous incident related to an online trend known as “car surfing.” Ava Broadhead, a sophomore at Cyprus High School, suffered critical injuries after falling from a moving vehicle last week, as reported by local law enforcement.
Unified police Sgt. Aymee Race detailed that Broadhead was standing atop a moving car when she fell, striking her head on the hard pavement. The fall resulted in severe brain trauma for the young girl, who is also a dancer.
In the wake of the accident, a GoFundMe page has been established to assist with the family’s mounting medical expenses. The page reveals that Broadhead was looking forward to performing with her dance team at the homecoming football game and attending the homecoming dance in a dress she had recently selected.
However, the accident has dramatically altered her life. Broadhead now faces a long road to recovery, during which she will need to relearn basic skills such as walking, talking, and even tying her shoes.
Broadhead’s mother, Kandis, told Fox 13 that her daughter underwent critical brain surgery following the incident, which took place at Magna Regional Park. The incident occurred after the high school’s homecoming parade was cancelled due to poor air quality.
Kandis Broadhead disclosed that her daughter was involved in the car surfing trend, which, while no longer popular on TikTok, can still be found on other platforms. Ava is currently in a medically induced coma to allow her brain to rest, but her mother fears a long and challenging recovery ahead.
Sgt. Race pointed out that car surfing is a social media trend that has reemerged among young people. The dangerous stunt has seen a resurgence in popularity, despite its origins dating back to the 1980s and its previous peak about a decade ago.
