Crystal Lissette Mar of Laredo, Texas, was taken into police custody last week after shooting her 50-year-old mother in the head with a .40-caliber handgun. Mar was arrested on the 8th of July and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Officers of the Laredo Police Department and Fire Department personnel answered the 911 call at their local home in the 1400 block of Hibiscus Lane. The caller indicated that her daughter had shot her in the head. Medics arrived at the scene to care for the wounded mother, who was conscious and talkative. The injured mother was taken to the nearby Laredo Medical Center.
Investigators determined that Mar had arrived at the home moments before the incident. Mar observed a handgun in her daughter’s purse. After convincing her daughter to remove the bullets and get rid of the gun, Mar’s mother soon heard a loud ‘pop’ and realized she had been shot in the head.
The police officers found Mar two blocks away from her mother’s home, still holding the magazine in her hand. Upon questioning, she informed officers that she was unfamiliar with using firearms, only intending to show her mother that the gun was empty. Once the magazine was removed, Mar pressed the trigger, causing the gun to fire one round.
Mar was brought to the Laredo Police Department Headquarters and is currently held at the Laredo County Jail. The available bail has been set to $30,000.
This unfortunate accident serves as a reminder always to handle firearms with care and follow all safety protocols. It is essential that guns should never be left unattended and that all ammunition should be locked away in a secure environment.
