In a shocking incident that has left a New Jersey community reeling, a woman has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly stabbing her four-year-old niece multiple times while babysitting her. The incident, which occurred in a home near East 24th Street and 10th Avenue in Paterson, was reported to the police on the afternoon of August 23.

The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the child was indeed stabbed multiple times and was rushed to St. Joseph’s Hospital for immediate medical attention. The child’s father, Faherem LaSane, identified her as Amber in an interview with a local ABC affiliate. He revealed that the attack resulted in a punctured lung and liver for his daughter.

LaSane expressed his shock and disbelief at the incident, stating that he was “dumbfounded” by the attack. He shared the emotional moment when his daughter opened her eyes in the hospital after hearing his voice, making eye contact and trying to see him.

A witness to the aftermath of the incident reported seeing a significant wound on the child’s forehead as her mother carried her out of the house. The accused, identified as Campechano, was not immediately located following the incident. She was arrested a month later, according to the prosecutors.

The motive behind the violent act remains unclear, with authorities stating that a dispute may have been the trigger. However, there are indications that the accused may have been dealing with mental health issues. Local residents reportedly recognized Campechano as someone who would often talk to herself while pacing outside.

Campechano is currently facing several charges, the most serious being first-degree attempted murder. She is also charged with weapon possession and child endangerment. The case continues to unfold, leaving a community in shock and a family grappling with the aftermath of an unthinkable act of violence.
