West Palm Beach, FL – January 25, 2006 – After the Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld released defense budgetary information for 2007, 2008 Presidential Candidate Daniel Imperato commented on Rumsfeld’s change of strategy in regards to Special Operations Forces.
“Over the past several months I have been requesting our administration and our government to consider the utilization of more special forces. I am happy to see the Associated Press release pertaining to Rumsfeld’s budget priorities and special operations forces,” stated Imperato.
The U.S. military plans to add nearly 8,000 troops to its elite Special Operations Forces next year to bolster America’s ability to fight terrorists and insurgents worldwide, defense officials said on Tuesday.
Imperato believes that our administration and Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld has been listening to his call for the use of Special Forces.
The plan would swell the ranks of the Special Operations Command (SOCOM), including Army Green Berets, Navy SEALs and the top-secret Delta Force, to about 60,000 troops by the end of 2007, said the officials.
Imperato felt now the US has an important bargaining chip, the reduction of US troops in Iraq.
“I stand up today to say that I believe our administration and Secretary Rumsfeld should consider an immediate global campaign utilizing the bargaining chip of the global support for the pullout of our American troops in Iraq. This will spare our soldiers lives, the lives of the coalition soldiers, and the lives of innocent Iraqi people,” expressed Imperato.
Even before 2007, Congress approved Bush’s request for an addition of more than 1,000 troops for the Special Operations Command in the current 2006 budget, including an increase in SEAL platoons.
“If I was leading the White House administration, my recommendation to the Secretary of Defense would be to contact the global array of countries, that have been alienated pertaining to the unilateral attack in Iraq and to make a deal with all of these countries. The agreement should state that we will withdraw all our troops from Iraq, if we can expand our coalition and all countries agree to allocate their Special Forces operational teams to unite and combat terror,” recommended Imperato.
This new sense of US/international optimism has been furthered by the election of a new Prime Minister in Germany, Angela Merkel, and more recently a new Prime Minister in Canada, Stephen Harper.
Imperato believes that by giving a little to the world we could gain a lot.
“I look forward to this approach being utilized and only wish that I was the one who could utilize it because I believe its time that we give a little and get a lot. The little that we give is the withdrawal of troops, the lot that we get is a greater coalition, a more significant team of special forces, which I believe will be less costly and will preserve American lives.”
