A catastrophic explosion occurred in Wilmington, North Carolina, on Tuesday morning when a vehicle collided with a gas line in a building. The incident, which took place around 11:30 a.m., was triggered when a car lost control while making a turn and crashed into the Eastern Carolina Veterinary Medical Center, located approximately seven miles east of the city’s picturesque Riverwalk.
The impact of the collision resulted in a towering plume of smoke visible from New Centre Drive. Debris from the explosion was scattered across the surrounding blocks, leaving onlookers in a state of shock and fear. The explosion’s aftermath was captured by a man filming from a nearby car dealership, who could be heard expressing his disbelief as sirens echoed in the background and pieces of the building fell onto the nearby pavement.
The cause of the explosion, whether it was the immediate impact of the car or a subsequent gas line rupture, remains uncertain. Firefighters were promptly dispatched to the scene, with three of them sustaining severe burns to their hands during their efforts to control the blaze.
The driver of the car involved in the incident attempted to flee the scene but was swiftly apprehended. As of now, no charges have been announced.
At the time of the accident, the Eastern Carolina Veterinary Medical Center was undergoing renovations and was scheduled to reopen in September. However, images from the scene show significant damage to the building’s facade and roof, with fires still smoldering.
The explosion’s impact was so powerful that it was heard over a mile away on the University of North Carolina’s Wilmington campus. Wilmington, known as “Wilmywood” for its role as a filming location for numerous movies and TV shows, is located on North Carolina’s southeast coast.
