Greek authorities found the 44-year-old woman conscious inside a life ring after an extensive overnight search southwest of Zakynthos.
ZAKYNTHOS, Greece — A 44-year-old woman was rescued alive after spending about 20 hours in the Ionian Sea when she went overboard from a cruise ship sailing southwest of the Greek island of Zakynthos, authorities said.
The Salvadoran passenger went into the water on the morning of Oct. 9 while aboard a Bahamas-flagged cruise ship about 72 nautical miles southwest of Zakynthos, according to the Hellenic Coast Guard. Authorities activated an emergency search that involved Coast Guard vessels, passing ships and a Greek Air Force Super Puma helicopter. The woman was located conscious early the next morning inside a life ring and later taken to a hospital for medical observation.
The Coast Guard did not name the cruise ship in its initial statement. Reporting by CBS News and other outlets identified it as Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas. The ship also participated in the search after the passenger was reported missing, according to a Coast Guard spokesperson cited by CBS and Agence France-Presse.
During the search, crews first located a flashing light associated with a life ring, the Coast Guard said. Early Oct. 10, the Madeira-flagged cargo ship MSC Rossella III, which was helping with the operation, located the woman alive and conscious in a life ring. A Hellenic Coast Guard rescue vessel then reached her and brought her aboard.
Video released by the Coast Guard showed rescuers approaching the woman in darkness and throwing her a rope as she remained in the flotation device. She pulled herself toward the rescue vessel before crew members brought her aboard. Authorities said she received first aid after the rescue.
The patrol vessel took the woman to the port of Katakolo, where an ambulance transported her to the General Hospital of Pyrgos for medical monitoring and examinations. The Coast Guard’s published statement did not report life-threatening injuries or provide a detailed update on her condition after she reached the hospital.
Authorities initially described the event as a passenger falling into the sea. CBS News, citing a Coast Guard spokesperson who spoke with AFP, later reported that the woman said she had jumped from the ship because she wanted to disembark. Officials have not publicly released a fuller account explaining the circumstances, and the available Coast Guard statement does not characterize the incident as a suicide attempt.
The rescue followed an operation that continued through the night in open water far from the Greek coast. The search included a rescue boat, a Coast Guard patrol vessel, nearby merchant ships and the military helicopter, according to Greek authorities. Odyssey of the Seas also assisted, CBS News reported.
The woman was found roughly a day after she entered the water, making the successful rescue the central development in a search that had extended across a large stretch of the Ionian Sea. Her identity has not been publicly released, and authorities have identified her only by age and nationality.
The Katakolo Port Authority is conducting a preliminary investigation into the incident, the Hellenic Coast Guard said. Authorities had not publicly announced additional findings explaining how the woman went overboard as of Thursday.
