PHOENIX, Ariz. — A 31-year-old man died after falling more than 40 feet while hiking South Mountain with his brother, leaving his mother grieving the sudden loss of her only child.
Gilbert Ortiz was hiking Friday when he fell from the mountain, according to Phoenix Fire officials. Investigators and relatives are still working to determine exactly what happened before the fatal fall.
Ortiz’s mother, Marie Ortiz, said her son was a hard worker who spent more than 10 years as an automotive technician. She said he was preparing for a new career in cybersecurity and planned to move from Arizona back to the Pacific Northwest to be closer to family.
“I don’t know how to carry on. He’s my only child,” Marie Ortiz said.
She said Gilbert had always focused on work and helping others, rarely taking time for himself. His plans to return home had given the family hope for a reunion before the hike ended in tragedy.
Marie Ortiz said she was more than 1,000 miles away in Oregon when she learned about the fall. She described the hours that followed as confusing and painful as information came in from a distance.
“I couldn’t help him. I feel so helpless because I can’t even hold his hand,” she said.
Authorities said they do not suspect foul play. The investigation remains focused on piecing together the events that led to the fall.
Ortiz’s family is now working to bring him back to the Pacific Northwest, where his mother said she hopes to bury him with his grandparents.
“At this moment, just trying to get him home. I just want my son home,” Marie Ortiz said.
The fatal fall has left relatives and friends mourning a man they described as hardworking, caring and ready for a new chapter in life. Investigators have not released additional details about the accident.
