A senior Israeli minister called Monday for Israel to re-establish a permanent Jewish presence in the Gaza Strip, laying out plans for the construction of a luxury neighborhood over the ruins of Gaza City.
Speaking at an event in Beit Shemesh ahead of the Rosh Hashanah holiday, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir (Otzma Yehudit) told senior police officers that he envisions permanent Israeli control over the entire Gaza Strip, with the government aiding large-scale voluntary mass migration of Gazans out of the coastal enclave.
In addition, Ben-Gvir said, Israel must resettle the Gaza Strip and proposed the establishment of a luxury neighborhood in northern Gaza for police officers.
“We will finish the mission, occupy Gaza, encourage voluntary emigration,” Ben-Gvir said.
“With God’s help, I am already planning the next neighborhood for police officers, which will be in one of the most beautiful places in the Middle East — we will finish the decisive battle in Gaza City, and we will establish there a magnificent police neighborhood overlooking the sea. Settlement brings security, and the time has come for Jewish settlement in Gaza.”
Ben-Gvir’s address came a month after the 20th anniversary of the 2005 Gaza Disengagement Plan, during which the Israeli government evacuated all 21 Israeli towns in the Gaza Strip, 4 others in northern Samaria, and handed Gaza over to the Palestinian Authority.
A long-time right-wing activist and attorney, Ben-Gvir protested against the Disengagement, leading supporters in establishing a short-lived outpost in an abandoned hotel in Gush Katif. Prior to the Disengagement, Ben-Gvir and his fellow activists were evicted by police.
“The time has come to settle – Jewish settlement,” Ben-Gvir added. “The time has come to encourage voluntary emigration [of Gazans], the time has come to bring the death penalty for terrorists.”
